Objective:
I have just created sections within Target for ArcMap and I am looking to display the extents (or defined area of interest) of these sections within my plan maps.
Resolution:
There is no inherent way to output these extents (defined area of interest) using the tools within Target for ArcMap. A user may want to use ESRI tools to create new feature classes and create polygons to detail the area of interest of sections to display within a plan map. If you are not inclined to create feature classes, please try the steps below to convert section extents created from the Section GX into layers within your plan map:
- Select the section button to initialize the Section GX.
- Within the output tab, ensure that the output is 'Load to Separate Dataframe(s)'.
- Select the Plan view tab and enable 'Plot Plan View'.
- Within the Section Location tab, you can select define to define your sections area of interest.
- If you are looking to display multiple sections extents on your plan map, you can utilize the 'Multiple sections' dialog to increase the number of sections created. You can then use the define button to create the multitude of sections. - Once happy with the preferences above, please select 'Ok' to run the section creation.
- The output will have two dataframes, a plan view and a section view (Two dataframes per section if you create multiple sections). Within the Plan view data frame, you will see a layer called 'Annotation'. You will right-click this layer and save it as a layer file (save each Annotation as a layer file that is created in the plan map dataframes if you have created multiple sections).
- Ensure that your working Plan Map dataframe is active and then import the layer file(s) to display the sections extents.
Notes:
Please note that this workflow does not work for Stacked sections as you are unable to output the 'Plan View' for each section. You will have to run through the 'Multiple sections' (workflow above) for each stacked section/series of sections.
