Error: "Unable to open "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\{file}" for mode "WriteOnly" because (Access is denied.). Directory or file not found, unreadable or may already be open"

Occurrence:

The following error is displayed when trying to run a function in the Geosoft Extensions for ArcGIS (or the Geosoft Plug-in for ArcGIS):

Unable to open "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin\{file}" for mode "WriteOnly" because (Access is denied.). Directory or file not found, unreadable or may already be open


Resolution:

  1. From the File menu, click Save.
  2. Browse to a folder you have read/write permissions to and enter a File name.
  3. Run the function again that resulted in an error and it should work. 

Root Cause

If the MXD is not saved, the program attempts to save the output grid, map, database, etc... to C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Bin (or on a 64-bit computer - C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Bin). This is a system directory that should not be altered.
