Symptom:
When opening a Geosoft created KML file in Google Earth I get a large red X and the image (raster) isn't rendered.
Resolution:
Instead of using a KML file to display your Geosoft map in Google Earth use a KMZ file.
- Select the map you show export.
- Go to Map > Export.
- Set the Output Format to Keyhole Markup Language (*.kmz)
- Click OK
You shouldn't have any problems displaying KMZ files in Google Earth.
Root Cause:
The web version of Google Earth does not support rendering overlays (ie. rasters) when using KML files. There are a few discussions about this topic on the Google Earth forum. Here's one of them https://support.google.com/earth/thread/29624201?hl=en
Note:
Both KMZ and KML work fine in Google Earth Pro.
