How to transfer a Geosoft legacy license key to a computer that is not connected to the Internet. (8.5 and earlier).

Objective:

I would like to transfer my license key to another computer. One or both computers do not have Internet access.

 

Resolution
If one of the computers doesn't have internet access then a license key can be transferred to another computer by using the Transfer License option. The Geosoft application you are using must be installed on the destination computer and you will need to obtain its Computer ID.

To obtain the Computer ID for the destination computer:

The steps to obtain the Computer ID vary slightly between different versions. One of following will apply and it will be obvious which one when you try. 
  • Start > All Programs > Geosoft > [Geosoft Product] > License > View Computer ID.
  • Start > All Programs > [Geosoft Product] > License > View Computer ID.
  • Start > All Programs > Geosoft Desktop Applications > License > View Computer ID
To create the transfer file:
  1. Close down the Geosoft application.
  2. The steps to transfer the license key will vary slightly between different versions of the software. One of the following will apply and it will be obvious which one when you try:
  • Start > All Programs > Geosoft > [Geosoft Product] > License > Transfer
  • Start > All Programs > [Geosoft Product] > License > Transfer license
  • Start > All Programs > Geosoft Desktop Applications > Transfer license
3. The Geosoft License Manager dialog will open. 
4. In the Target Computer ID field, enter the Computer ID of the target computer noted from the steps above.
5. Do not use the default location.  Click the browse button under Specify location to place license file and choose an alternative location. There is a bug in the application which will stop you from saving the file directly to your C:\ drive. 

To setup license key on other computer
  1. Move the license file created to the target computer. 
  2. Right-click on the license transfer file and from the pop-up menu, select Install License (Geosoft Product).
    The Geosoft application you are using will now be licensed on the target computer.

Notes

Computer ID numbers change each time a license is moved off a computer, so check the computer ID just before you begin the transfer.
