Occurrence:
The following error message is returned when I try to import a Geosoft 2D section grid extracted from a voxel in Leapfrog by right-clicking in Geophysical Data and selecting Import 2D Grid.
“Crooked grid files cannot be imported as a 2D grid”
Resolution:
Extract your section grids using the option Interactive from map.
- Open up the 3D viewer.
- Go to Add to 3D > Grids > Extract Section(s) from Voxel.
- Enter the Voxel file.
- Enter an Output grid file name.
- From the Section selection option, choose Interactive – from map.
- Click OK.
- Choose a Plan Map of the area to define the profile and click Open.
- On the plan map, using the mouse, click the initial and end points.
You can look at the lower right corner of the map windows to check the exactly coordinate values before you click the points.
Root Cause
Leapfrog does not yet support Geosoft’s crooked sections format. This includes straight grids created using the crooked section code.
When a section grid is created using crooked section code, Geosoft creates a line trace in the accompanying *.xml file showing the path of the “crooked section” and then creates two supplementary grids *_planar.grd and *._relief to drape the sections onto a surface. So far, this method is not supported.
For example, grids created in the 3D Viewer using “Extract Section(s) from Voxel” in non-interactive mode (e,g, All Lines – from current database) will not work even if the lines are perfectly straight (with just end points defined in the database) because this method uses the crooked section coded.
