Error: "The ***.geosoft_gmsys2d.data\views.map is not a known Structured Storage file format." Or "Unable to open the file ***.geosoft_gmsys2d because Invalid character in the given encoding.”

Occurrence:

When attempting to open a GM-SYS model, created in a previous version of Oasis montaj, in 9.8 I receive one of the following error message:

"The ***.geosoft_gmsys2d.data\views.map is not a known Structured Storage file format."
"Unable to open GM-SYS 2D model file ***.gms because failed to load ecsfile, rc=-1"

 

Resolution:

To resolve the issue upgrade to Oasis montaj 9.9.  This issue was introduced with the release of Oasis montaj 9.8. 

In updating to 9.9 isn't an option you can attempt the workaround below. 

This error is caused by the use of non-ASCII characters in the name of the model files.  To workaround the issue you will need to remove all non-ASCII characters from the names of all model files.

  1. In Windows Explorer locate the model folder and open it. This folder will contain all the files associated with the model (<modelname>.*).
  2. Each file in this folder will need to be renamed by removing any non-ASCII character from the model name. 

Once the renaming is complete, all model files should start with the same name and end with different extension.

If you have other GM-SYS models created in previous version of Oasis montaj containing names with non-ASCII characters in the filenames, you want to open in 9.8, you must rename the model.  If you have already upgraded to 9.8, you must do so by renaming the individual model files, as described above. If you are still running an earlier version of Oasis montaj, you can do so by saving a copy of the model, as described below:

If your model name has non-ASCII characters in you should ideally rename them before upgrading them in 9.8

  1. Open the GM-SYS model in a previous version of Oasis montaj 9.7 for example.
  2. Save the mode to a new name using "Save To" and exclude any non-ASCII characters.

OR

  1. Select all of the model files in the folder (<modelname>.*)
  2. Right-click on one of the files and select “Rename”.
  3. Remove the unsupported character from the filename.
  4. Hit OK to rename all files.

Root Cause:

This was a bug introduce with the release of Oasis montaj 9.8 which was addressed with the release of Oasis montaj 9.9.
