Error: " Unable to Create lock (C:\Programs\Geosoft\Desktop Applications 9\temp\gmbackup\....lck). No autosave will be effective for model"...""

Occurrence:

When creating or saving a GM-SYS 2D model I am prompted with the error message:

"Error: " Unable to Create lock (C:\Programs\Geosoft\Desktop Applications 9\temp\gmbackup\"".lck). No autosave will be effective for model"..."".

Resolution:

The workflow below will rectify the issue:

  1. In GM-SYS, File menu > Preferences.
  2. Select "Files" in the tree at left.
  3. At the bottom of the right-hand panel, change the "Backup Dir" field to "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\GMSysBackup".
  4. Type this path into the Explorer address bar:  "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\" and create the directory "GMSysBackup" there.

Root Cause

This error occurs because the model is trying to create a lock file where the user lacks permission to write under 'C:\Program Files'.  Geosoft Desktop Applications used to store "user" files in this folder path and GM-SYS used the same location.
