Occurrence:
In Oasis montaj 9.8, models created in a previous version will automatically be updated to a new model format. You will be notified with a message when a model is upgraded,. In some situations, re-opening the upgraded model will result in the following error:
"Unable to open the file ***.geosoft_gmsys2d because Invalid character in the given encoding. Line ***, position **"
Resolution:
To resolve the issue upgrade to Oasis montaj 9.9. This issue was introduced with the release of Oasis montaj 9.8.
In updating to Oasis montaj 9.9 isn't an option you can attempt the workaround below.
In 9.8 this error is caused by the use of non-ASCII characters in any lables within the *.geosoft_gmsys2d file. This may include block names, wells and well horizons, named horizons, and possibly other model components.
To workaround the issue you will need to open the *.geosoft_gmsys2d file in a text editor and remove all non-ASCII characters.
- In Windows Explorer locate the *.geosoft_gmsys2d file and open this in a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad ++
- Locate the non-ASCII character. NOTE: the error message indicates the "Line" in the *.geosoft_gmsys2d file containing the first use of a non-ASCII character.
- Replace each non-ASCII character with an ASCII character or remove it.
- Save the *.geosoft_gmsys2d file (without changing the extension).
- Reopen the model in GM-SYS Profile.
NOTE: if your *.geosoft_gmsys2d file contains multiple non-ASCII characters you may need to perform these steps multiple times.
Root Cause:
This was a bug introduce with the release of Oasis montaj 9.8 which was addressed with the release of Oasis montaj 9.9.
