Objective:
I have created a crooked section in my Geosoft applications and would like to display it in Leapfrog Geo.
Resolution:
The current release of Leapfrog Geo does not support crooked sections, you will need to convert the crooked section into a file format supported by Leapfrog Geo. There are two methods we will explore in this article:
- Converting the crooked section into a "thin voxel" and then importing that into Leapfrog Geo using an OMF file.
- Converting the crooked section into a "thin voxel", then converting the voxel into a GOCAD Voxet, and importing the voxet into Leapfrog Geo.
Both workflows start with a "thin voxel" so lets cover this workflow first. To create a "thin voxel" from a crooked section, you will need to first save the crooked section to a database, and then 3D grid the database into a voxel.
Converting a crooked section into a "thin" voxel:
- Convert the crooked section into a Geosoft database (*.gdb) by going to Image > Utilities > Export Grid to Database.
- NOTE: be sure to set the Decimation Factor in both directions to 1
- This will save the X,Y,Z and data values from your section grid into a Geosoft Database (*.gdb)
- Then create a new voxel from the database by going to Voxel > New > Kriging.
- Select the data channel and give the output voxel a name.
- You will likely need to reduce the cell size to obtain a finer resolution as the default size will likely be a little to course.
- You may also want to consider lowering the Blanking Distance in the Advanced parameters.
Once you have a "thin" voxel your happy with, you can move onto one of the following workflows.
Option #1: Export the voxel in a OMF file and import it into Leapfrog Geo
Exporting a voxel to an OMF file:
- Create an empty 3D View by going to 3D View > New.
- Add the voxel into the 3D View by going to Add to 3D > Voxel
- Export the voxel by going to Export > OMF file
Import the OMF in Leapfrog Geo:
- In Leapfrog Geo go to Leapfrog Geo > OMF > Import
- Select the OMF file and click Open
Option #2: Convert the voxel into a GOCAD Voxet and import it into Leapfrog Geo
Converting a Voxel into a GOCAD Voxet:
- Voxel > Conversions > Voxel to GOCAD
- Select your voxel, give your output voxel a new name, and set the orientation.
- Press OK
Displaying the GOCAD Voxet in Leapfrog Geo:
- On the Project Tree select the Geophysical Data folder and click Import GOCAD Model
- Select the GOCAD model (*.vo) and click Open
- In the Import Gocad Model dialog set the Subsample Rate and click OK
- To display the imported GOCAD model, select it in the Project Tree and click View Object
