Error: "Unable to open project: ****.gpf. This project may already be open in another Oasis montaj session".

Occurrence:

When attempting to open a Geosoft project file (*.gpf) I am presented with the following error:

"Unable to open project: ****.gpf. This project may already be open in another Oasis montaj session.

 

Resolution:

There are several reason this error can occur. Below are several potential workaround to get around the issue:

Close all open instances of Oasis montaj / Target

  1. Close Oasis montaj / Target by going to Project Quit.
  2. Open the Task Manager
  3. Under Processes look for omcore.exe or omtarget.exe, select them and press End Task 
  4. Try again.

Clear the Temp folder:

  1. Close Oasis montaj / Target by going to Project Quit.
  2. In Windows Explorer go to C:\Users\***USERNAME***\AppData\Local\Temp and delete the contents of this folder.
  3. Restart the PC
  4. Try again.

Move the entire project file from a shared drive to a local drive on your PC:

  • If your *.gpf is saved to a shared drive or on a file sharing server, like Dropbox, try moving the entire project folder onto your local C:\ drive and opening it from there. 
  • NOTE:  if your using Dropbox, ensure that active syncing isn't enable when Oasis / Target is running.

If none of the suggestion above help, you may need to consider creating a new project file.  The hope being, that the problem with the *.gpf only extents to the project file itself and not the files associated with the project. 


Create a new Project File and bring over your project file:

  1. Create a new Project file. 
  2. Then add your grids, databases, and maps to the new *.gpf.
